Nick’s experience spans commercial work in production, food service and tourism; project management; practical project delivery; group facilitation; research; writing and speaking for general and specialist audiences.
The majority of his work has been with food and farming businesses and organisations, reflecting a lifelong interest in good food and its provenance, originating from childhood foraging for marsh samphire, sheep sorrel and wild plums to supplement meagre school lunches.
After studying mathematics and philosophy at the University of Cambridge, Nick spent two years working on organic and conventional farms in the UK, Italy and Ireland, with responsibilities ranging from menial muck-spreading to management of a dairy goat herd. Subsequent employment included an organic wholesaler and home delivery service, food service specialising in wild foods, educational tourism and his own forest products company in north Wales.
Nick is now a director and associate consultant of East Anglia Food Link having worked since 2002 on a range of projects including the creation of the Eostre Organics co-operative; development of educational materials; research into local supply chains, independent retail outlets and healthy eating; work with community food groups on food growing and access; and supply chain brokerage and development, focusing on meat supply chains and public sector opportunities.
Nick has worked with international, national, regional and local organisations, including the Soil Association, AlimenTerra, Food Links UK, DEFRA, the Institute of Food Research, local authorities and Tastes of Anglia.
When time allows, Nick edits, writes and publishes The Tracing Paper, a website investigating the origins of our food. A native and long-time resident of East Anglia, he now lives in London with his partner and two young daughters.
